Snapz Pro Makes Screen Grabs A Snap
Snapz Pro 1.1.1 ($20, 30-day Trialware)
Ambrosia Software

Although many portions of the Mac OS have changed significantly over the years, the humble screen capture feature (Command-Shift-3) has only enjoyed one enhancement, allowing the capture of a portion of the screen (Command-Shift-4) or a window (hit Caps Lock after Command-Shift-4). But it still doesn't support graphic formats other than PICT, and can't always capture exactly what you want.

Web publishers and power users alike will appreciate the flexibility that is offered by Snapz Pro. For starters, screen captures can be saved in the popular, cross-platform GIF and JPEG formats, in addition to the standard Mac PICT type. One can also select the creator of the corresponding file, as well as interlacing for GIF, and image quality for JPEG images.

But wait, there's more! If you choose to have the Snapz Pro palette presented after you choose the (customizable) capture key combination, you are offered the additional options of sending the captured image to either a Screen Snapz folder (available from the Apple Menu), the clipboard, or your printer.

The Snapz Pro palette also offers the option of scaling the capture anywhere from 10 to 400 percent, as well as changing the dithering of the image. You can also choose among using screen, window or selection capture methods, plus a new menu option. This option captures only a menu, which isn't always supported properly by the Mac OS screen capture.

Another plus for web authors is that the image height and width are saved in the comment portion of the file, making the creation of efficient HTML which uses these parameters much easier.

A well written, thorough set of documentation rounds out the package. Snapz Pro is trialware. After 30 days, a nasty watermark stating "Unregistered Version of Snapz Pro" will appear on your images. For those who need enhanced screen capture abilities beyond those of the basic Mac OS features, Snapz Pro is sure to fit the bill.
