DV Dailies - Digital Projector Competition Heats Up With Sonys New 4K System

by , 11:00 AM EDT, October 28th, 2004

The Hollywood Reporter has posted an article examining the potential effect of Sony's newly developed digital projector on digital cinema. Written by Nicole Sperling, the article explains while the projector is almost fully developed, the expected arrival could pose a threat to Texas Instruments who currently has DLP projectors in 255 theaters worldwide. According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Among all of the demonstrations set to take place at ShowEast, Sony Corp.'s presentation of the prototype for its 4K digital projector arguably is the hottest ticket. The product could push the great d-cinema debate in a new direction, making widespread deployment of 4K technology viable during the foreseeable future and turning the media giant's electronics division into a leading force in the exhibition industry.

[...]

Of course, the 2K vs. 4K issue remains contentious. Texas Instruments has touted its 2K DLP Cinema System for the past few years -- with test sites up and running in theaters nationwide -- and has become aggressive during recent months in an attempt to sign on distributors and get its system deployed before a 4K option becomes reality. Most exhibitors, on the other hand, are reluctant to install a lesser-resolution system that could become outdated quickly.

Subject: Couldn't be better?

I am fortunate enough to live near a theater with a DLP projector, and even at 2k, the pictures it produce are awesome. They are very bit as sharp as 35mm and much cleaner and more stable then even IMAX.

It's enough to make me wonder how 4k could be any better. (Unless I sit in the first row or something.)
