OMG! IT'S JAGUAR! What Are You Going To Wear?
by , 1:30 PM EDT, August 23rd, 2002
Classic movies often show an infinitely rational, square-jawed hero giving a well-meaning but firm slap to the cheek of an overexcited femme. It works without fail, and it's a technique that could probably use a little dusting-off right now. This quote, with identifying information removed, comes from a Yahoo Groups mailing list that shall remain nameless:
so is there a party in your area? my nearest store is (store name removed). have u seen todays joy of tech? hehehehehe......... my girlfriend and i were going to dress up with cat ear headbands but after she saw that we decided that was too lame.......so now we dont know what to wear but we really want to mark the occasion with something.......does anyone know if it goes on sale when they open or only @ midnight?
If anyone needed a good old hysterical-woman-slap, it's the people who are freaking out over what to wear to the party. Now, according to Dr. Mac's OS X Tip of the Day, Steve Jobs himself might be turning up at the Palo Alto store tonight. Can you imagine it?
"Like, did you hear?"
"Yeah. No. What?"
"Stevie's going to be there!"
"Shut up! No way!"
"Yeah, like totally!"
"OMG! Are you going|?"
"As if I would miss it! I am going to be the first in line!"
"No way! Your mother totally grounded you from any more geek events."
"She doesn't even know. She thinks I am going to a football game!"
"As if."
"So, what are you going to wear?"
Come on, kids. Don't make us come over and slap you...
It's entertaining to see the community get so excited about the release of Jaguar. We haven't seen this much hype since Guy Kawasaki wandered the corridors at 1 Infinite Loop. With the excitement that Apple has managed to generate over Jaguar, as well as the full version price the company is charging, it's a wonder why Apple made this a point release in the first place. Certainly we, the members of the Mac community, are anticipating it like it's a full version upgrade, and maybe that's OK. It's nice to have something to be excited about, and it may even offer a nice snapshot to potential switchers.
After all, when was the last time that the Windows world was this excited about something new out of Redmond? Windows 98, at best, and it's more likely that we would have to go back to Windows 95 to find this sort of hype. This, after Big Redmond spent more in marketing Windows XP than Apple made in profit in any 6 month period going back several years. Since most Lemmings hate using their computers, it may be good to show them how much we enjoy using our Macs.
So, enjoy Jaguar, go to one of the many 10:20 PM events taking place tonight, and have fun!
Just don't get carried away.
Oh, and look for us at the Palo Alto store. We'll be the ones wearing the matching Apple shirts...
