Apple has taken full ownership of Severance, bringing the hit drama entirely under Apple Studios. The move shifts the series from an outside production model to an in-house operation, giving Apple complete control over the show’s future. The deal also opens the door to expanding the franchise beyond its planned four-season run.
The series was previously produced by Fifth Season, with Apple serving as distributor. Now Apple Studios will produce the show directly, while Fifth Season remains involved as an executive producer alongside creator Dan Erickson and executive producer Ben Stiller.
Deadline reports that Apple paid just under $70 million to acquire the intellectual property and all rights to Severance. The report explains that rising production costs, tax credit delays in New York, and higher borrowing rates placed financial pressure on Fifth Season during Season 2.
“While costs were going up and Season 2 was taking longer, borrowing became more expensive, with rates climbing from 1% to 5.5%-6%, making it harder to carry the cost for up to 36 months — the gap between Seasons 1 and 2 — especially when tax rebates are not coming in quickly enough.”
Apple executives concluded that owning the show would allow them to manage the financial burden more effectively. By producing in-house, Apple can absorb delays in tax rebates and avoid relocating production purely for financial reasons.
Expansion Plans and Season 3 Update
Severance has already been renewed for Season 3, and a fourth season is part of Apple’s long-term plan. While the creators currently envision a four-season arc, they remain open to expanding the universe through prequels, spinoffs, or international versions. This strategy could help maintain audience interest during long gaps between seasons.
Season 2 reportedly cost as much as $20 million per episode. Despite that expense, viewership doubled compared to Season 1. Apple now aims to balance creative ambition with tighter cost management.
Production on Season 3 is expected to begin in the summer, though filming may shift by a few weeks as scripts are finalized. Apple plans to complete all scripts before shooting to avoid costly delays and reshoots.
With full ownership secured, Apple gains greater flexibility in budgeting, talent negotiations, and long-term franchise strategy. For a series that defines the platform’s brand, the company is now betting on deeper control and sustained growth.
