Claude can now control your Mac to open apps, edit files, and run tasks

Anthropic lets Claude control your Mac to open apps, edit files, and run tasks in new macOS research preview feature.

Anthropic has introduced a new feature that lets its Claude AI take control of your Mac to complete tasks, marking a major step in how AI agents move beyond chat and start acting directly on your device.

The update brings this capability to Claude Cowork and Claude Code, where users can allow the AI to interact with their computer just like a human would, including opening apps, navigating browsers, editing files, and handling complex workflows without manual input.

Engadget reports that this feature is rolling out as a research preview for Claude Pro and Claude Max users on macOS, and Anthropic plans to refine it based on feedback while keeping it limited to subscribers for now.

Anthropic explains that “in Claude Cowork and Claude Code, you can now let Claude use your computer to handle tasks,” and adds that it “can point, click, and navigate like you would to do everything from opening and editing files to handling complex software tasks.” This makes Claude act more like an assistant that performs actions instead of just suggesting them.

Claude moves beyond chat into direct control

This update builds on the idea of AI agents that actively complete work, and Anthropic also highlights that Claude will first try to use connectors such as Google Workspace or Slack, but if those are not available, it can still execute tasks directly on the system.

The company notes that Claude “should ask for permission before taking these actions,” and it recommends avoiding sensitive data during early testing since the feature is still under development.

Anthropic also connects this feature with its Dispatch tool, which allows users to send instructions from their phone and continue the same task on their Mac, creating a continuous workflow across devices.

The company says users can “instruct Claude from your phone,” which adds flexibility for those who want to manage tasks remotely without sitting in front of their computer.

This release shows how AI tools are shifting toward full system control, and while it remains in preview, it signals how future assistants will handle real work directly on your device.
