The Built-in ethernet connection on my MacBook Pro has suddenly grayed out (as though there is no ethernet adapter available). When I plug in a network cable nothing happens.

If I try and add a new network connection, EN0 is not available and when I look at ifconfig in terminal EN0 is not listed. The built in ethernet also seems to be missing in the System Profiler.

I am running Boot Camp beta 1.1 and the problem has affected both OS X and Windows. Not sure how but is it possible that the network card itself has been fried?

Is there any way I can uninstall and reinstall the card to see if that makes a difference?

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Matt

It is possible that the ethernet is fried. Unfortunately, the ethernet controller is on the motherboard of the laptop.

When did this happen? Do you have an Apple Store nearby?

Thanks for the response. It happened a couple of months ago but it didn't become a problem until this week when I moved to a new client site where I have to use ethernet rather than wireless.

I do have an Apple Store nearby, would they be able to tell if it's fried?

I'm pretty confident that they would. Dead ethernet ports are not all that rare: my '99 Clamshell had a fried ethernet port as well. I just hadn't noticed it, going directly from 56k to AirPort.

You could try resetting the PRAM and see if that helps.

Shut down the computer. Then start the computer whilst holding down cmd-opt-p-r. Let the chime go three times then release the keys.

Might salvage the port. Might not. Can't hurt either way.

Just to close the issue, I managed to get into the Apple Store in London today and the problem is a broken solder on the logic board so it's going to have to go in for a repair when I can spare it for a few days.

Thanks for all the help anyway.

Matt
