Mac Gaming News - Duke Nukem 3D and Apeiron Arrive on Mac OS X

by , 2:10 PM EST, November 30th, 2004

Ryan Gordon has released a Mac OS X version of Duke Nukem 3D, the classic first person shooter game. The 20MB file will install the game from the CD from either MacSoft's Mac version of the game or the PC "Atomic Edition" version.

Duke Nukem 3D was originally released in 1996. While MacSoft no longer sells the game, the PC "Atomic Edition" version can still be purchased direct from 3DRealms, the original developer, for $19.95.

Gamers without the full version of Duke Nukem 3D can still download the OS X patch and play the free trial level of the game. The OS X update is also available from MacGameFiles.

Apeiron X

Ambrosia Software, meanwhile, has Apeiron X, a Mac OS X version of its shareware action/puzzle game from yesteryear.

"During a port through the looking glass, the mirror shatters and your ethereal energy (you know, the stuff that allows you to get up and go to work on a Monday morning...) is trapped within one of the crystal shards. Immediately, the residents of the mushroom patch sense your presence. Lead by the Pentipede, this motley crew of mushroom patch misfits relentlessly hunt the crystal ( You! ), intent upon sucking out the trapped energy. The Pentipede is a sinister creature that has the ability to divide. So, if you think your troubles are over when you shoot this sneakered psycho once, you are twice as wrong."

Along with Mac OS X compatibility, Apeiron X features updated 16-bit graphics and other tweaks. Apeiron X is $15 shareware; owners of the original Apeiron can upgrade for $5.

And you probably will be.

Duke Nukem X plays just like the original, including the finger-twisting keyboard commands. It did give me a hard freeze once, but the second try lasted longer than I did.

Aperion X is 16 bit with new prettier icons, and a new Internet based high scores list, but the unregistered game limits you to 15 levels. I'll probably dig up the $5 upgrade charge sometime soon.

Whoa... Old school. These games are from the age when to get infinite ammo you had to type, like, "GIVEMEBULLETS". Todays games require you to go into the dang code to do anything.
