[7:30 AM] WebTen 3.0 Add Support for Web-Based E-mail
by Staff

Tenon Intersystems is now shipping WebTen 3.0. The new version includes enhanced security, compatibility, robustness, and extensibility. According to Tenon:

WebTen 3.0 is an upgrade to its industrial-strength, high-performance Apache-based Web server for Power Macs. The new WebTen now supports configurable web-based email, secure remote administration, enhanced SSL certificate support, dynamically loadable Apache modules, and a Sherlock-compatible high-performance search engine. The new release also includes many additional enhancements and modifications for improved robustness and ease-of-use.

Apache is well known as stable, full-strength, feature-rich web server software used on over three million web sites worldwide. Tenon has taken this mature, integrated, scalable software and extended it with performance enhancements, security, and Macintosh-specific features to make a unique Apache for the Macintosh platform. Tenon's Mac OS-based Apache is running in a pre-emptive multitasking environment and is able to sustain over 1100 hits/second - a five-fold performance advantage over WebSTAR. WebTen is one of the easiest-to-use and fastest Apache web servers in the world.

WebTen's new anytime, anywhere WEBmail enables users to access email from any device running a browser. WebTen's WEBmail is compatible with SMTP mail servers: thus, the WEBmail client can POP mail from any SMTP server and any mail client can POP or IMAP mail from the WEBmail server. With an additional option, the WEBmail client can be hand tailored with unique logos and banner advertising on a virtual host-by-virtual host basis.

WebTen's SSL has been updated to support Y2K-compliant two-tier Verisign certificates and to support Netscape Certificate Servers for corporate and military intranets that employ internal certificate authorities using the Netscape software. WebTen's Administration Server now uses SSL to give webmasters the security of encryption while configuring virtual hosts remotely.

WebTen's new dynamic architecture lets webmasters add Apache modules on-the-fly, simply by dragging them into a Modules folder. The widely used PHP3 is included with WebTen 3.0 as a configurable module. PHP is a scripting language that combines many of the best features of Perl, shell programming, and C and includes a variety of database interfaces. With WebTen, Macintosh web developers can begin to embrace standard internet web tools, such as the powerful PHP, as a first step in transitioning to Apple's preemptive multitasking Mac OS X.

In addition, the new version of WebTen includes pre-installed demonstration copies of Matador Design's WebEvent, for web-based calendars, Lundeen Associates' WebCrossing, for web conferencing, and Aestiva's HTML/OS, for building dynamic web sites.

WebTen 2.x customers can upgrade to WebTen 3.0 for US$199; upgrades from WebTen 1.x are US$250.

WebTen 3.0 for new customers is US$495.

A 'sidegrade' from WebSTAR or Apple's ASIP is only US$350.

WebTen 3.0 is downloadable from the Tenon web site with a built-in 14-day license.
