[6:00 AM] SoundJam Receives Update, OS X Version Available
by Staff

Casady & Greene have released SoundJam MP 2.1 in both the Free and Plus varieties, and have also announced that their OS X preview version of SoundJam MP Plus is now available. The new version allows users to convert MP3s into CD directly through SounJam and Adaptec's Toast. According to Casady & Greene:

Casady & Greene, Inc., publishers of award-winning software since 1984, announced today the release of version 2.1 of SoundJam (TM) MP Plus, the premier all-in-one player and encoder for the Macintosh, and SoundJam (TM) MP Free, a first-rate MP3 player for the Mac. This release of SoundJam improves encoding quality, and includes support for directly creating your own audio CDs using Adaptec's Toast (TM) v4.1, and also support for new portable audio players from Nike (TM), S3 (TM), and Creative Technology, Ltd. (TM).

The new SoundJam MP Plus is currently the only full-featured, all-in-one player and encoder that allows Macintosh users to create MP3 files from their audio CDs, and download the songs into portable MP3 audio players like the Rio 500 (TM) from Diamond/S3, the Nomad II (TM) from Creative Technology, Ltd., and Nick psa[play (TM).

What's new in SoundJam MP Plus v2.1?

  • The ability to create Audio CDs directly from SoundJam. You can now create audio CDs directly from SoundJam via Adaptec Toast, v4.1 or later.
  • Supports new Rio 600, Nike psa[play (TM), Nomad II and Nomad II MG (TM)
  • Support for RealJukebox Music Package (TM) (RMP) files. SoundJam now supports RealJukebox Music Package (RMP) files.
  • Improved MP3 and MP2 encoding. Improved MP3 and MP2 encoding quality for all machines. This is a further improvement on the encoding found in versions 1.1, 1.6, 2.0, and 2.02.
  • Continuous CD playback. Adjacent tracks on a CD are now played without interruption.
  • Firmware updating for Rio 500, Rio 600 and the Nike psa[play. SoundJam MP can be used to update the Rio 500, Rio 600 and the Nike psa[play.
  • New equalizer presets. There are now 20 graphic equalizer presets.
  • Support for .pls, .m3u, and .rmp files

Casady & Greene also announced the release of a Carbon version of SoundJam MP Plus that works with and compliments Mac OS X DP4, which was distributed to developers at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference on May 15, 2000. As Mac OS X is updated, the Carbon version of SoundJam MP will also be updated. When the final shipping version of Mac OS X is released, the Carbon version of SoundJam MP Plus will ship at the same time.

The Carbon version of SoundJam MP Plus has been written to take advantage of the Carbon APIs in Mac OS X. Carbon is designed to speed development and ease the transition from previous versions of Mac OS, while allowing applications to take full advantage of the great new features of Mac OS X.

SoundJam MP Plus is available as a download for US$39.95, and on CD for US$49.95. The regular SoundJam MP player is free. You can find more information at the SoundJam web site.
