|[10:00 AM] MacLaunch Buys MacOPINION, Heralding Future Wave Of Consolidation
In what we think will be the first round of consolidation in the Mac web market, MacLaunch has announced the purchase of MacOPINION. MacLaunch is a self described Mac portal whose principals include Joe Ryan, the founder of Applelinks. Ben Garland, founder of MacOPINION will be turning over all management of his excellent web site to MacLaunch. Details of the transaction were not disclosed. According to MacLaunch:
MacLaunch, the Internet's first all-encompassing portal targeting Macintosh users, today announced that it has signed a letter of intent to acquire the MacOPINION web site.
Under the terms of the MacLaunch/MacOPINION agreement, MacLaunch will take possession of the MacOPINION web site and will assume total responsibility for the operation of the site including the continued production of original Mac-centric content and all advertising sales. The addition of the MacOPINION operation will boost the MacLaunch network of sites to approximately 1.4 million page views and 2.8 million ad impressions per month.
The MacOPINION site will continue to feature original content produced by some of the leading columnists in the Mac user community, while also offering direct access to the wealth of services offered at MacLaunch, including Mac-centric news and software updates, free e-mail, chat rooms, news, sports, weather, stock tracking, online shopping and web search tools.
You can find more information on both sites at those same sites.
The Mac Observer Spin: We hope to see Ben Garland, the founder of MacOPINION, reemerge in some other function associated with the Mac web community. If not, his presence will be sorely missed, though we expect to see MacLaunch manage MacOPINION very well. MacOPINION has long been one of our favorite sites with great columns from Del Miller and John Martellaro, two of the most talented writers in the Mac world, as well as several other very good writers. The site featured only commentary and yet still managed to be one of the more successful Mac sites since its inception.
In the meanwhile, MacLaunch takes a giant step forward towards competing with the Big Boys with this acquisition. The Mac web community is a large and diverse one that includes a multitude of web sites competing for a relatively small pie as far as advertisers are concerned. While many sites launch only to peter out after a few months, there is a long list of sites that have shown staying power. At the same time, creating and managing a web site that features daily content is an expensive affair, even if the writers participate for the fun and to help evangelize the Mac platform. With all this in mind, we see a wave of acquisitions and mergers occurring during the next 12 months as many Mac sites congregate towards those sites with a stronger business structure. MacLaunch is certainly one such organization, and The Mac Observer wishes them well. The end result of this inevitable consolidation will be more and better coverage of the Mac market in our opinion.
