Joining Fujitsu in the FireWire Magneto Optical (MO) drive category, Fantom drives has announced the availability of a 640MB FireWire MO drive. The new FireWire Magneto Optical Drive provides Mac G3/G4, and now Pismo PowerBook users, an alternative to the traditional mass storage devices. According to Phantom Drives:
Kicking off an expansion of its FireWire product line, Fantom Drives today announced a new removable FireWire drive based around the rugged Magneto Optical standard. Available in a 640MB configuration, the new Fantom Drives FireWire Magneto Optical drive is also backward compatible with 540MB, 230MB, and 128MB Magneto Optical media.
Designed from the beginning to be the most reliable removable storage available, Magento-Optical (MO) represents the most rugged and flexible removable storage in the industry. Computer professionals heavily dependent on electronic data storage have found no practical substitute for the superior reliability of MO disks. They are rugged enough to withstand hostile environmental conditions such as moisture, dust, shock, vibration, and unlike conventional magnetic media, are not affected by magnetic fields or X-rays.
The Fantom Drives FireWire Magneto-Optical brings ease of use to this incredibly reliable data storage medium. Because FireWire lacks the troublesome termination and ID selector settings that have made difficult the configuration of SCSI products, Fantom Drives FireWire drives can be set up in minutes. Once installed, a FireWire device can also be "hot plugged" or unplugged without powering down the computer. Additionally, because FireWire is now integrated into every new iMacDV, G4, and PowerBook from Apple, the Fantom Drives FireWire Magneto-Optical drive combines ease of use with the incredible durability of MO media for the perfect backup solution.
Includes IEEE-1394 cable, Magneto Optical cartridge, El Gato FireWire Formatting Utility, and 1-year warranty.
The Fantom FireWire 640MB Magneto-Optical Drive is available for US$599. The company has not yet added specific information about the new product to their web site.
