[4:00 PM] Fantom Spooks The CD-RW Market With The Introduction Of A FireWire DVD RAM Drive
by Staff

Fantom Drives has announced an addition to their FireWire DVD line up, a FireWire DVD-RAM drive. The new drive writes to 2.6 GB and 5.2 GB disks, and reads DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD-R, and all the various flavors of CDs. According to Fantom Drives:

Fantom Drives today extended its DVD offerings with the addition of FireWire(tm) DVD-RAM and DVD-ROM drives to its growing FireWire(tm) product line. As the first company to bring FireWire(tm)-based DVD-Disc Technology to market, Fantom Drives has again reaffirmed its commitment to pioneering cutting-edge products and expanding the reach of digital-convergence.

Since its debut as the new high-capacity data storage and home-entertainment heavyweight, DVD has become an unbeatable standard for large-scale delivery of data, as well as super-crisp video and audio. The Fantom Drives FireWire(tm) DVD-ROM drive allows the home user to quickly and painlessly add this exciting technology to their FireWire(tm)-equipped Macintosh system, and can read DVD-ROM and DVD-Video formats, as well as single-sided DVD-RAM discs and all standard prerecorded and recordable CD formats. Compatible with hardware and software DVD-decoder technology from Apple Computer, and an upcoming upgrade to the Wired4DVD(tm) MPEG-2 decoder kit, the Fantom Drives FireWire(tm) DVD-ROM drive is the perfect addition to any DVD-ready PowerMacintosh computer.

Fantom Drives has also made DVD-RAM, the preferred archival medium for the Video, Audio, Graphics, and Pre-Press industries, easier to use with the introduction of the Fantom Drives FireWire(tm) DVD-RAM Drive. Based on the popular GF-1000 DVD-RAM mechanism from Hitachi, this drive delivers a data rate of 1.38MB/second and a data access time of 200ms, writing to both 2.6GB single-sided, and 5.2GB double-sided DVD-RAM media. The drive is also capable of reading all 120-cm optical disc formats -- including DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, and DVD-R, as well as all prerecorded and recordable CD formats. The included Radialogic formatting software, from industry leader Prosoft Engineering, offers full media formatting and preparation features such as partitioning, verification, and password protection.

DVD-RAM Drives ship with one DVD-RAM cartridge, and both drives ship with an IEEE-1394 cable, Radialogic Software, and are covered by a 1-year warranty.

You can find more information on the new drive at Fantom's Web site. The drive is available now and is priced at US$749. Not e that the speed limitiations come from the drive mechanism, and not from the FireWire bus.
