Apple Ranks In The Top 100 Web Sites Internet-Wide For July
Competition is fierce in the battle for eyeballs on the web. PC Data has released their July rankings for the Top 100 web sites and we find that Apple has done remarkably well. The results are divided into the Top 100 Web Properties and The Top 100 Web Sites (Domains). In both cases, Apple is ranked where there is no other computer manufacturer listed. Apple is ranked #68 in the Top 100 Web Properties, and #79 in the Top 100 Web Sites. In both cases, Microsoft ranks in the Top 2. We have commentary at the bottom of these two long tables. According to PC Data:

PC Data, the leader in software and hardware technology tracking, today released its monthly listing of the top 100 Web properties and sites for July 1999.

The lists are compiled by using a proprietary software tool that tracks "unique visitors" who go to either a Web site or a Web property (defined as a network of related sites) each month. Every visitor is counted only once, regardless of how many times the individual visits a site. The sample currently includes 55,000 home users who are not using the proprietary AOL browser. PC Data will begin tracking AOL users beginning August 1999. The total universe of non-AOL home Internet users is approximately 50,000,000.

The Mac Observer Spin: It is actually fairly amazing that Apple's web site ranks so high. There is little doubt that the popularity of QuickTIme on both sides of the platform wars has much to do with this. People curious about the iMac also contribute.

But another part of it is that Apple is the only Mac hardware and Operating System company in the world. There are a gazillion and two choices for Wintel drones to turn to for information. With so few Wintel companies generating any kind of company loyalty, there isn't much desire to head to a company's web site like Compaq or Dell.

Above and beyond that, the aspect of owning a PC that is most troublesome is Windows itself. Where do you for troubleshooting, technical, and other tip-related information? To Microsoft, the number 1 web property and number 2 web site. Go figure.
