The Instant Messaging Clone Wars Hit the Mac!
Arctic Software announced the release of RealAIM v1.0b1, the first Macintosh clone to America Online's Instant Messenger. According to Arctic Software:

Although it only features the basics of AIM (Instant Messaging, Buddy Lists, and Styled Text support), RealAIM does feature speakable buddy lists, and is about 2x the speed of the original AIM. Also, you can expect RealAIM to grow rapidly in releases to come.

Future Features:

  • File Transfer Support
  • Buddy Chat Support
  • Buddy Finder
  • AppleScript Support
  • "Away" Messages (featuring message logging)

RealAIM v1.0b1 is available for download (file size: 778k).

The Mac Observer Spin: With all the hubbub over Instant Messaging, it is very telling that AOL Instant Messenger clones are beginning to appear on the Mac. This is an interesting battle that, with audio and video conferencing on the way, could have a major impact on the companies involved. We are curious to see what becomes of all this. Until then, be glad you're in the group that benefits most from this type of battle: consumers!
