[2:30 PM] Final Cut Pro Gets Mac OS 9 & G4 Support, Finally
by Staff

Apple has at long last released an update to Final Cut Pro that brings Mac OS 9 support, G4 Optimization, and other new features to the package. Final Cut PRo is Apple's professional digital video editing software solution. Mac users in Japan will be pleased to know that this version also brings support for Japanese character rendering in addition to Japanese, French, and German versions of the software itself. Apple has also included several 3rd party additions to the software making this an impressive upgrade. According to Apple:

Apple® today announced the immediate availability of Final Cut Pro™ 1.2, the latest version of Apple's award-winning professional video editing, effects and compositing software for broadcasters, educators, web producers and professional videographers. Optimized for the new Power Mac™G4, Final Cut Pro 1.2 takes advantage of the incredible speed of the G4's Velocity Engine™ to deliver video rendering performance up to three times faster than before.

Final Cut Pro 1.2 includes support for the European PAL format and is available in three new languages — French, German and Japanese. It also includes support for the input and rendering of Japanese characters, such as Japanese double-byte glyphs.

Other features of Final Cut Pro 1.2 include: support for Mac® OS 9, a major new release of the Macintosh® operating system; full frame-rate with improved quality on computer screens while simultaneously playing on NTSC/PAL monitors; the ability to import Macromedia Flash files; convenient three-key shuttling, and support for additional third-party After Effects plug-ins. Additional enhancements include improved batch capture including the ability to capture multiple clips and sequences at once, new audio reverb filters and faster digital video encoding and decoding. In addition to the enhanced video rendering performance on a Power Mac G4, Final Cut Pro 1.2 delivers two times the rendering performance on a Power Mac G3.

Final Cut Pro 1.2 includes complimentary software that enhances Final Cut Pro's post-production suite of features. Puffin Design's Commotion DV, MAXON Computer's Cinema 4D GO and Terran Interactive's Media Cleaner EZ 4 for QuickTime™ provide users with 3D, paint, added effects, web compression and distribution capabilities.

*Puffin Design's Commotion DV bundled version does not include the FX Feature Set.

Final Cut Pro is priced at US$999 and the update is free to registered owners of the product. Apple says the software is available now. You can find more information on Final Cut Pro at Apple's web site.

The Mac Observer Spin: This is indeed an impressive update bringing many new features to Final Cut Pro, but why did it take so long for Apple, of all companies, to offer Mac OS 9 support in their own product. In any event, this update is sure to make many Final Cut PRo users happy.
