[6:00 AM] Cool Mac Linux Release For MACWORLD
by Staff

A special edition of Yellow Dog Linux, along with a collection of Linux goodies, will be available at Macworld next week. Terra Soft will release Champion Server 1.1 along with a number of other Linux updates for the PowerPC. According to Terra Soft:

Since the introduction of Champion Server 1.1 at MacWorld NY, there have been a variety of developments in the PowerPC Linux community. In order to offer these updates to the MacWorld attendees, Terra Soft is pleased to offer, in addition to Champion Server 1.1, a limited, special edition of a third CD entitled "Tasty Morsels".

The "Tasty Morsels" CD will include all of the current Champion Server 1.1 errata updates--security and bug fixes. In addition, Tasty Morsels will include the following software updates:

  • BootX 1.1.3 (the latest, stable version)
  • BootX 1.2b3 (the latest beta release)
  • Kernel 2.2.12 RPMs
  • Kernel 2.2.14pre9 snapshot
  • KDE 1.1.2
  • October GNOME
  • Mouseconfig 4.0-1a (properly configures USB mice for kernels newer then 2.2.6)

And best of all, the CD is BOOTABLE on New World ROM systems (iMac and newer) via the new "yaboot" bootloader. For owners of the newest Apple hardware this will allow you access the YDL installer directly from CD with no Mac OS required. This feature will allow owners of Apple's iBook, iMac DV, or AGP "Sawtooth" G4 to install Yellow Dog Linux from a CD.

"Champion Server 1.1 remains a viable product. With the addition of the third CD to the Mac World audience, we hope to provide a proven distribution with updates that users have been asking for and support for Apple's latest machines," stated Dan Burcaw, Chief Technology Officer of Terra Soft.

Terra Soft has also included demo and trial versions of the following software, already available for Yellow Dog Linux:

  • FrontBase database
  • Communigate Pro e-mail server
  • Urchin web analysis tool

Finally, "Tasty Morsels" will include a demo version of the to-be-announced iTools (by Tenon Intersystems) for Yellow Dog Linux. Previously available only for Mac OS X, iTools is a family of tools essential for serious eCommerce and commercial content delivery.

For more information visit the Terra Soft web site or visit their booth at Macworld San Francisco.

The Mac Observer Spin: Another strong MAc Linux release is a good thing for the overall Mac market. With the markets and people alike taking becoming so fixated on Linux, the more offerings there are for the Mac the better.
