Japanese USB/FireWire Market Leading Industry
Apple has announced that there have been 132 USB and 20 FireWire devices introduced in Japan making it the hotbed of USB and FireWire development. Apple says that worldwide there have been 148 USB Mac products introduced making the Japanese market dwarf any other part of the world, including the US. The list of companies shipping Mac USB products in Japan reads like a who's who in the electronics world. According to Apple, this list includes:

"Companies shipping USB products in Japan include: Accton Technology (hub); Adtec (joystick, keyboard, mouse models, hub); Alps (printers); Applix (CD-R/writer); Cameo Interactive (CD/DAT data output); Canon (printers); Dennow (joystick, keypad, mouse models); Epson (printers, scanner); Focal Point Computer (HD, digital camera, USB-ADB adapter, joystick, gamepad, mouse); Hagiwara Syscom (SmartMedia reader/writer); Hewlett-Packard (printers); Imation (SuperDisk drive); Interware (MPEG video converter, CCD camera); Iomega Japan (Zip drive); Kodak Japan (digital cameras); Matsushita Electric Industry (SuperDisk drive); NEC (scanners, CCD camera); Pixela (compact flash card reader, DV to USB converter); Roland (MIDI device); Sanwa Supply (ergonomic trackball, mouse models, hub, CCD camera); UMAX Japan (scanner); Wacom (pen tablets); and Yano Electric (floppy drive, SmartMedia reader, hub, magneto optical drive)."

The Mac Observer Spin: The Japanese market was the first with many USB options such as floppy drives and has seen a much higher variety of these solutions to boot. Many of these products may be coming to the US at some point, but for now Japan is showing its muscle.
