Mac USB Security Key Introduced
Aladdin Knowledge Systems has introduced eToken, a USB security key for the Mac and PC. eToken is a key-sized device that is plugged directly into a USB port. According to Aladdin Knowledge Systems:

"eToken's technology encrypts information and stores private keys, passwords or electronic certificates in a USB-based token the size of a domestic house key.

When it is inserted into a USB port, a highly secure 'dual factor authentication' process takes place in which (a) eToken is 'read' by the host PC or network, and (b) the user types in his or her personal password for authorization. This unique combination of something the user has -- eToken -- with something he or she knows -- a password, ensures unrivaled security. eToken's mobility, ease-of-use and simplicity in deployment make it an ideal authentication solution for VPN, extranet and e-commerce."

eToken is priced between US$20 and US$50 depending on quantities purchased.

The Mac Observer Spin: While they are sure to make many form-factor and other technology based changes in upcoming years, security devices like the eToken are a Future Trend. Logging onto networks or a computer, using protected software, and even accessing computer controlled doors are all made simple by a security key. This is helped also by the fact that a security key is a form-factor we are already familiar with, a key. This helps bypass the typical resistance new concepts will often meet when introduced. In addition, these devices will be able to handle higher levels of encryption as time and miniaturization advance, making the devices even more handy. The power of USB helps bring this technology to the Mac at the same time which helps position the Mac in a favorable light.
