Media Metrix Confirms Big Increase In Traffic For Apple
Media Metrix announced a new service today called Weekly Flash. Media Metrix is a company that rates traffic to Internet sites. Their new service called Weekly Flash offers weekly numbers to subscribers and is faster dose of stats from the company's former monthly numbers.

The press release from Media Metrix mentioned that Apple had seen a big increase in traffic to the site with the release of the QuickTime version of the Star Wars: The Phantom Menace trailer. We wanted to find out more so we dug a little deeper with some of our sources.

The Numbers:

Time Period Unique Visitors
Week Ending 2/21/99 185,000
Week Ending 2/28/99 201,000
Week Ending 3/7/99 110,000
Week Ending 3/14/99 321,000 <--Week The Trailer Was Released

The Unique Visitors number is a tricky one in that it measures unique IPs. With the vagaries of dial-up accounts which reuse IP addresses and Proxy servers, 321,000 "Unique Visitor's" is a very respectable amount indeed and represents an increase of 192% over the prior week and 95% increase over the average for the preceding 3 weeks.

That coupled with the 3.5 million downloads that Apple reported on 3/16/99, and it would seem that Apple scored a major marketing coup with the partnership with LucasFilms on this trailer.
