Power On Revs Up ACTION GoMac With New Features
Power On Software has released the latest version of ACTION GoMac, the utility that brings the power of the Windows 9x task bar to the Mac. The new version brings new features and improved performance in several areas and carries the moniker of 2.0.1. According to Power On:

The new release offers improvements in available memory notification during application launching under low memory conditions. In addition, the new version adds drag and drop support for Timbuktu Pro and provides an improved installer, as well as enhanced support for various Extension Managers, including Apple's latest version and Conflict Catcher 8®. Moreover, several internal improvements enhance GoMac's overall performance.

GoMac implements an elegant, highly useful program bar and customizable start menu on the Mac OS that provides a complete launching and process management solution. Among its features, GoMac offers:

  • One click opening of programs and documents through a simple Drag and Dock™ setup
  • Instant access to common system settings, file search, memory use, and recent items
  • A Program Bar with one-click process switching and program minimization. The Program Bar displays all open programs with their memory usage and allows them to be closed and hidden while in the background.
  • Convenient launch capability from a customizable Start Menu
  • Full Drag and Drop support for both the Program Bar and Start Menu
  • Mouseless task switching via an elegant Keyboard Switcher
  • Ability to access application memory settings from the task bar contextual menus, in keeping with OS 8.5's enhanced get info feature.
  • A tastefully customizable start button for those Mac users who want to avoid any semblance of Wintel décor
  • Ability to "minimize" background applications to a small icon near the clock
  • Option to turn off the Start menu and use only the task bar
  • Office 98 integration. Users with Office 98 installed will see a Microsoft Office 98 item in their Start Menu for easy access to Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Support for Apple's Control Strip technology
  • Task bar with integrated clock and perpetual calendar for instantaneous date reference

The update is free to registered owners of version 2.0. Power On has the full version priced at US$49.95 and offers a rebate through many retailers for US$20.

The Mac Observer Spin: Most of the Mac Observer staff uses GoMac and we all swear by it. As many of you know, the Task Bar is the only really good thing Windows ever contributed to the GUI world, and the original GoMac team, now under the leadership and control of PowerOn Software, have implemented the functionality of that Task Bar on the Mac. It definitely makes using the Mac all that much easier.
