X Window Server For Mac Gets An Update
|
Have a need or desire to run X Windows on your Mac? Tenon InterSystems, the makers of the powerful Mac web server Ten, have updated XTen to version 6.1. XTen is an X Windows server for the Mac, allowing for Mac X Windows clients to be run on a Mac network. The new version supports encrypted passwords for LAN security, multiple password-protected desktops, centralized administration, and OpenGL. According to Tenon Intersystems:
Tenon Intersystems today announced an upgrade to its unique X Window server for Power Macintosh. The new X server is the fastest X server on the Macintosh market and the only X server that supports local X Window managers and local X clients. Tenon's X is running in their highly-acclaimed Mach/BSD execution environment, providing the same multithreaded architecture that is now being touted by Apple in their newly released Mac OS X Server. This foundation allows true X server operation and yields true X server performance, all in an easy-to-use Macintosh application package. The X server runs alongside Macintosh applications, giving the user two desktops: the traditional Finder desktop and a standard X Window desktop.
XTen is a flexible Macintosh application that can be tailored to suit individual environments. The default AfterStep Window Manager gives a NeXT-like appearance. Alternate desktops include an OpenLook Virtual Window desktop or a Motif-like Lesstif desktop. All are easily configured via a browser-based point and click interface. A systems administrator can use this point and click interface to centrally configure a site's XTen platforms. Included with XTen are over 100 client applications. New features of XTen 6.1 include a native fast file system for top performance; improved XDM session control; secure shell remote client launch; multiple password-based user desktops; hot-key 'xterm' launch; integrated CDE fonts; and support for shared memory extensions. In addition XTen supports ICCCM 2.0 scalable fonts, font compilers, and X image extension. XTen not only supports the X display Management Control Protocol, but XTen can be configured as an XDM manager. Further it can be configured as a font server or set up to use a remote font server. For added compatibility, XTen now uses Open Transport as a default, but Tenon's high-performance, multi-link TCP protocol stack is included as an option.
The upgrade is priced at US$99 for owners of XTen 6.0. The full version is priced at US$175. Site licenses are available, with special sidegrade pricing for eXodus sites. An OpenGL option is available for $99, with site licensing available as well. XTen 6.1 with a built-in 14-day license can be downloaded from the Tenon web site for testing.
