Thu Apr 06, 2006 9:27 am Subject: networking ports in hotels
Hi guys. I listen to your show each week. Thank you for some terrific insights. I fly jets around the world as a contractor for a number of companies and I wind up in hotels all over. Now I am in a nice hotel in the Frankfurt, Germany area that has a SwissCom wireless network that costs about $15/day. My company negotiated with the hotel to put in a wired LAN on two floors of the hotel as this is less expensive for our company when it comes to picking up the bill for internet. On the SwissCom network, I was able to use my ISight connected to my G4 IBook for video chat with my family back in Florida. Now, however, I cannot connect. I've used the file sharing pane in syst. prefs to try and open the ports recommended on the mac discussion boards but still no luck and since I have not got access to the router in the hotel (and they were not receptive when I asked them to open a few ports) is there any other way to utilize the A/V portion of my IChat? The text function works fine. My Skype audio works fine. I'm guessing Skype Audio and IChat Audio are on different ports. One other question that has to do with MAC/Win incompatibility. My company website has a feature that uses a mouseover to access information I need. When I use Safari the link lights up, but does not provide the data. It works ok on VPC but who wants to do that? What is the protocol or convention that makes a mouseover on a web page work for both a mac and wins browser so I can ask my IT dept to use it? Thanks again. This week's show has convinced me to get my daughter a MacBookPro this Summer if she can keep her scholarship $$.. Otherwise it may wait another year if I have to pay full tuition:-) Jim
