After suffering through yet more broadband problems with John's cable modem, Dave and John get a Geek Gab out, albeit a day late. Dave's chiming in from Austin, Texas, and he and John talk about their favorite ways to keep their Macs running smooth, and how to tell when it's not! John also wraps up his Apple tech support experience for us all, as well.

Subject: Guys, neat article, but please correct the grammatical error

The correct word is _smoothly_, not 'smooth'.

It's an adverb, not an adjective — something of which a literate fourth-grader (or at least a moderately attentive seventh-grader) should be clearly aware.

Does no one actually teach grammer anymore?

Subject: Logout/Login instead of rebooting.

I suggest just doing a logout/login when you Mac becomes unusually slow. I rarely have to do that, but it worked for me each time.

It's also logical since a logout kills anything that you could have activated after login, and by anything, I mean it Anyway it's nothing like what I was going through on OS 9. Mac OS 9.2.2 was relatively stable for me, but like since System 7 I had to reboot often just to get performance back after a few hours of use. I must admit than in those days I was always running the bare possible minimum of RAM, and a lot of VM. The logout/login trick shows that in OS X, the problem is not related to Virtual Memory (at least for me).
