by , 9:00 AM EDT, June 9th, 2007

Direct Link: MP3 Version

TMO's editor-in-chief Bryan Chaffin joins Ricky and Jeff this week to sort out how Sun's ZFS file system fits into the Mac OS X picture, and make a few World Wide Developers Conference predictions. Also, we send Ricky off to summer camp.

The Apple Weekly Report will be included in TMO's main RSS feed, and also in its own feed if you'd like to add it directly to your podcatching client.

Subject: Missing some of the points of ZFS

Yes, the RAID portion is great - but NTFS (Windows) and others have had this for years.

Two things that you miss that are outstanding:
First: one file can be nearly 16 Exabytes with 2^48 number of files on a volume. That is huge!

Second - reads have queue priority. Writes MUST wait until reads are done. This means that the system responsiveness to the end user remains high. Even if the IO becomes very busy, the reads have prority. The amount of time you will see the spinning beachball of frustration should be greately reduced.
