The iPhone machine is in full swing with carrier deals for over 20 new countries announced this week, Apple's lawsuit express dropped off a couple of passengers, Steve Jobs isn't making as much as he used to, Microsoft bailed on its Yahoo takeover, and NBC cozied up with the ever popular Zune. Subject: iPhone coming to the Philippines

Manila, 12 May 2008 – Globe, SingTel, Bharti Airtel and Optus today announced that they have signed an agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone to the Philippines, Singapore, India, and Australia later this year.

In the Philippines, 26% of Filipinos (over 22 million) carry cell phones, far outstripping the number of landlines and wired phones combined. In 2004, the total number of CMTS subscribers grew 34% to over 30.2 million. The Philippines continues to be the world leader in the Short Messaging Service (SMS) market. Carriers process more than 200 million text messages per day.

There are five GSM service providers in the country operated by three conglomeates with core businesses in property development (Globe Telecoms/Touch Mobile: Ayala Corporation), telecommunications (Smart Mobile/Talk n Text: Philippine Lng Distance Telephone), and food processing (Sun Cellular: Commonwealth Foods). Of these, Globe and Smart are the acknowledged market leaders perenilly engaged in marketing campaigns that shadow each other's activities.
