Cyberdog 2.0b1 has arrived and done so in a big way. All of the features present in the earlier Alpha versions are there, coupled with the fastest performance yet to be seen from our electronic canine pal.
A true champ
Performance hang-ups encountered during the formatting of Web pages has been virtually eliminated as have the subsequent hang-ups during the downloading of images. Page rendering times are now equal to the rendering times of both MSIE and Navigator, although both of these browsers do appear faster because of the way they progressively load pages. The Cyberdog browser is still easily the champ when it comes to flipping back and forth between loaded pages. There is also a nagging lag that appears while scrolling down a long web page. This tiny annoyance is rarely encountered but should be mentioned.
A meth lab must be behind this
The email client has also received a massive jolt of caffeinated stimulant. Opening email and newsgroup messages, both new and old, is now downright snappy with system 7.5.5 and even faster with 7.6 and above.
This beta fixes almost every complaint I had concerning Cyberdog. The biggest room for improvement is now support for more HTML tags. Most especially, the formatting of tables and the information contained in table cells needs a little work.
Best Of Breed
All in all, the folks down at the Cyberdog Team in Cupertino deserve a great big pat on the back. They have managed to improve Cyberdog at a rate here-to-fore achieved only by the fine folks at Netscape. Of course, Cyberdog makes fewer demands in the way of RAM than does Navigator, but hey, itÕs more fun to use too.
