Analyst: Look for Mac Pro at WWDC
TMO Reports - Analyst: Look for Mac Pro at WWDC
by , 8:45 AM EDT, August 2nd, 2006
Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster, predicts that Steve Jobs will unveil an Intel-based replacement for the PowerMac G5 at the World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) on August 7. In addition to the Power Mac successor, likely to be dubbed the Pro Mac, he also expects Apple will demonstrate a preview version of Mac OS X 10.5 that features full Windows integration.
Mr. Munster thinks it's possible that we may also see a redesigned iPod nano with a scratch-resistant metal case, an Intel-based Xserve, and the debut of feature-length film downloads at the iTunes Music Store (iTMS).
The iPod nano is due for a refresh, and since the top-most complaint about the model is ease of scratching, Apple is likely to return to a metal case - A feature that worked well for the iPod mini. The possibility of movie downloads at the iTMS means that Apple may roll out the service without a true "video iPod."
Mr. Munster comments "Apple has been working on a movie download service for several months, and while we believe they would prefer to announce it along side a new video iPod with a larger screen, there is increasing pressure in the movie download space, with CinemaNow and Movielink making progress. As such, we believe it is possible that Apple could announce such a service at the WWDC with or without a new iPod."
Although possible, but not likely, Apple may introduce the iPhone, a new iPod with a larger display, a redesigned iPod shuffle, and a video-enabled AirPort Base Station.
With so many new product predictions, some people are bound to be disappointed when the product they want to see isn't announced. Mr. Munster thinks we should be looking forward to the next few months for the product releases.
"Ultimately we believe that all of the above products will be released within the next 6-9 months," he says. "We believe the better approach to Apple's product roadmap is to think of it within a 6-9 month timeframe."
Piper Jaffray is maintaining its "Outperform" rating for Apple with a target price of US$99. Apple is currently trading in the pre-market at $67.18, up 0.42 (0.63%).

Observer Comments
Um, what about updated MacBook Pro's? That seems more likely at a "Developer's Convergence" than an new iPod nano and an iPhone. Developers outside of apple don't develop for iPod family products, so it would be irrelevant to them. The iPod is not an open platform. I am 99.9% sure that an announcement after this conference for a iPod media event will be called. Look at the pro lines to be updated. Sources have told be to look out for a 13.3" screen MBP and that all notebooks will default to the glossy screen and the matte will be the option.
Well, I'd say that the release of the successor to the Power Macintosh G5 at the WWDC is inevitable, as the PowerMac is a pro machine, is important for developers, and is also the last model not to have received an Intel update (apart from the Xserve, which is also due for an update).
Otherwise, I agree with Websnap that the WWDC is a pro and developer oriented event, not a consumer event. So releases of iPods and iMacs seem unlikely.
Having said that, Apple does have a strong tendency to do exactly the opposite of what people expect them to do, so a host of new consumer products is foreseeable.
I'm getting all impatient.

I have to admit, introducing consumer devices with any detail other than a mention at the developer conference would seem like a slap in the face. They paid the high price of entrance to be there and for apple to waste their time to announce things that are irrelevant to them seems like a weak move. If it was monumental, like announcing the switch to intel, oh, and here is the first machine, an iMac, that's a different story. Or, the iPod system is now open to developer, start making games, then right on. Otherwise the duped developers into a 1600 dollar session to clap at products irrelevant to their line of work. True, the trade sessions are the real reason they are there, but the keynote and their subsequent announcements are what stay in your head. Let's keep it memorable. Plus, I REALLY want as new MBP with intel core duo 2.
