Apple Exec: iLife '07? Stay Tuned
Apple Exec: iLife '07? Stay Tuned
by , 6:25 PM EST, January 17th, 2007
Apple does not discuss unannounced products as a matter of policy, but Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer told analysts Wednesday to "stay tuned" for more information about the software suite. The comments came during the company's Q1 conference call with analysts in response to a question about whether or not Apple would update iLife in January of 2007.
Many, including The Mac Observer, expected Apple to announce an update to iLife at this year's Macworld Expo, the venue for most iLife announcements. Said announcement did not, however, take place. While iLife doesn't have a major impact on Apple's sales throughout the year, it does have a positive impact on the company's gross margins, and is thus of interest to analysts.
Towards the end of the conference call, Jonathan Hoopes of ThinkEquity Partners asked Mr. Oppenheimer if Apple anticipated updating iLife in January. Mr. Oppenheimer replied with, "We don't announce future products, but stay tuned," which is as close to commenting on future or unannounced products as Apple ever comes.
A reasonable translation of such a comment is that we should expect an announcement very soon, likely even in the January time frame in which the question was framed.

An interesting comment given Apple's interest in TV. Is this a pun indicating that iLife '07 will include apps designed for AppleTV and the streaming of data from computer to TV (much like the USB on the new Airport Base). Or a hint re: iTUNES? Only one way to find out, Tune in next week - same Mac time, same Mac channel!
As I recall from WWDC in August, Steve said that iLife would come bundled with Leopard. The question is, will the new software suite _require_ Leopard, or will it be available for separate purchase for Tiger/Panther users?
And if iLife is only available with Leopard, will that be the end of the $129 price point we have come to expect with OS releases?

I don't recall Steve said that iLife would be bundled with Leopard. While Steve did say that the approach to Leopard was for it to include "the whole box" or something like that, there wasn't a statement that iLife would not continue to be a separate product. There was speculation on what Steve meant, and ideas like bundling iLife or iWork were suggested, but it didn't come from Apple.
In my opinion, iLife '07 will be announced together with Leopard, anyday soon.
Because, the buzz around iPhone needs to be hollowed first, now Apple has placed a huge profit during its 4th quarter, this buzz will lower in a day or two and then, next week probably, the announcement.
I think the press will see this first (invitation etc).
But I'm pretty curious to the new stuff in the suite: a new iWeb (which would be necessary), a new Garageband with more cool stuff (maybe a Garageband Express, sort of semi professional, and with DJ features in it), and an improved iPhoto (which still generates some UI difficulties amongst users apparently... I give iLife courses, and iPhoto seems to be not so straightforward as Apple thinks). For the rest, iMovie is good as it is, iTunes is perfect to me. So, maybe a better integration (UI look) with Leopard...
just my 2cents
