Cool Waste Of Time - Bing! Clunk! Zip!: Two Minute Rube Goldberg Machine From Honda

by , 11:00 AM EDT, June 25th, 2003

Ever wonder what a group of bored automotive engineers and ad execs would do if you sat them in a big room with a car and a video camera? You MUST see Honda Cog over at BeamTV.com.

Honda Cog is a commercial for Honda's Accord Wagon, a model reserved for the European market. It is effectively one of the biggest, coolest, and longest Rube Goldberg machines we have ever seen. According to an MSNBC report, the commercial was shot in one take, after 606 attempts to get it right. You simply have to see it to understand how cool it is. Normally, of course, we wouldn't direct you to something as crass as a commercial, but that's just how cool this is.

MSNBC is also reporting that the commercial will not be shown on American TV because Honda officials don't think the commercial says enough to American viewers. Fortunately, however, it is in the process of sweeping the Internet. The link to the BeamTV site is to a QuickTime version.

While you're at it you might want to take a look at some of the other 'reels' lurking in BeamTV's vaults. Just what the hey is BeamTV anyway?

Well, that depends on what you're interested in but, essentially, it's a site that provides archiving and distribution services for high quality video, if you are interested in that sort of thing. For most of us, BeamTV.com is a repository of interesting short movies, like 'Honda Cog'. You can even orders a box that will sit on your TV so that you can watch the movie 'reels'.

Check it out if you are looking for A Cool Waste of Time.

Note: BeamTV.com requires that you set up a login account before you can access any of the movies, though we were actually able to watch this one without doing so. There's no charge for the account, but you may incur charges for some of the services if you decide to use them. You won't get charged for watching the movies.

If you prefer to see a Flash version of the commercial, head over to MediaConnection.com's version.

Do you have a Cool Waste of Time you found on the Internet? Tell Vern Seward all about it, and he'll pass it around...
