Country Hopping in iTunes

TMO Quick Tip - Country Hopping in iTunes

by , 7:30 AM EST, December 6th, 2006

Let's say iTunes is displaying the iTunes Store for the wrong country, or maybe the country you live in was just added and you want to see what's available for download. Not a problem. iTunes 7 offers a quick and easy way to switch between iTunes Store countries. Here's how:

I start off in the US iTunes Store.
  • Launch iTunes 7
  • Select iTunes Store in the iTunes source list.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the iTunes Store window.

  • Pick the country I want to switch to...
  • Click the My Store pop-up menu and choose your country. In this case, I'm switching from the United States to New Zealand store.

...and now I see the iTunes New Zealand Store.

If an iTunes Store was just added for your country, it may not show up in the My Store list. Just quit and relaunch iTunes to refresh the My Store list.

Unfortunately, your iTunes account login is valid only in your country, so you can't purchase songs and videos from other iTunes Stores.

I don't see why Apple limits purchases internationally. Why not let us buy songs from any international music store -- say, for $2 to cover additional legal costs. I mean, you pay more for international CDs... BUT YOU CAN STILL BUY THEM. The idea that you can't buy songs from other iTunes stores is silly in the age of global internet.

Rats. There's a lot of stuff I'd love to get on iTunes Japan that isn't available on iTunes USA.

Why do people constantly make this mistake???

its NOT apple that restricts it. Its the music industry that stops apple from doing it.

its not that hard a concept to grasp... and i'm looking at you , journalists...

Subject: Buying from iTunes Japan in another country

I use both the US and Japan iTunes Store, and I don't have a credit card from Japan. The only way to do this is to buy an iTunes Gift Card from Japan. When you visit Japan, you should pick up some.

Otherwise, if you don't go to Japan regularly, you can go to jlist.com or other website that sell them. Of course, you will pay a small premium.

I've bought a few songs, but I also download the free download every week, so it is worth it.

Here's the instructions from the j-list website:

1. If you've already got an account in your home country, sign out by clicking on the Account button in the upper left hand corner, then Sign Out.
2. At the bottom of the iTunes Music Store window, choose the Japan Store.
3. Click the iTunes Music Card link along the left side, and enter the scratch-off number printed on the back of the card.
4. Create a new account, using any address in Japan you like (you may use ours as a dummy address if you like). You can do this in English or any language that's supported by iTunes -- Japanese is never required for the iTunes Japan Store.
5. Enjoy purchasing great music and albums from Japan's iTunes Music Store!

That's all there is to it -- iTunes music from Japan is fully compatible with iTunes and iPods from any country. iTunes has no problem with maintaining multiple accounts for multiple music store.

Good luck.

I agree. I wish there were a way that you could actually buy things from other countries' iTunes stores.
