TMO Quick Tip - Printing: Web Receipts

by , 7:30 AM EDT, October 22nd, 2007

If you use the Internet to make purchases on a regular basis, it can get difficult to keep track of everything you bought and just how much you have spent. Mac OS X can make that chore a little easier thanks to a cool printing feature that saves Web receipts as PDF documents.

After you complete your online purchase and see a Web page receipt, choose File > Print in your Web browser, and then select Save PDF to Web Receipts Folder. Now give your Web receipt a descriptive name, and click OK.

Web Receipts is hiding under the Print dialog's PDF button.

Mac OS X will save the Web page as a PDF and store it in the Web Receipts folder inside your Documents folder. Your Web receipts are nicely grouped together, searchable by Spotlight, and you can print them any time you want.

Been doing that since OS 8.something with Print2PDF. Of course, it's a couple of steps quicker in OS X, without the bother of going back and resetting your default printer in the Chooser.

Tip: If you do a lot of "printing" to PDF, scroll down a bit further under the PDF menu and choose "Compress PDF". The resulting docs are a LOT smaller in file size, and I swear you can't tell the difference in quality. I even use Compress PDF to create full-size architectural drawings as PDFs, and even curved lines look good.

Edit: I tried this step by step knowing that there was no "Web Receipts Folder" in my home Documents folder, so OS X created one for me. However it did not give me the opportunity to give the file a name, descriptive, or otherwise.

If "compress pdf" isn't small enough for a very complex document containing photos and graphics, try the program PDFCompress.app which makes them even smaller. It will take a 1.5 meg file down to a 450k pdf. There IS loss of quality in the complex graphics, however. It is useful for proofing layouts by email with clients, who already have the original photo or graphic.

This is to verify that two king palm trees were purchase for 3415 Warpath San Antonio, Texas 78238. The cost was 60.00 each. Total Cost: 120.00
