Leopard: IDLE-ing with Mail

TMO Quick Tip - Leopard: IDLE-ing with Mail

by , 7:30 AM EST, December 14th, 2007

Apple's Mail application supports both POP and IMAP email accounts, and if you check your email from multiple devices, IMAP can be a real time saver. If you don't want to wait for your Mac to check for new messages, you can save even more time -- or waste more time, depending on your perspective -- by letting Mail take advantage of IDLE.

What's IDLE, you ask? It's a protocol that lets an IMAP email server tell your email client when you have new messages instead of waiting until your client app checks. When your email gets the signal telling it that you have new mail, it automatically updates your inbox. Think of it as proactive email checking instead of reactive checking.

Mail in Mac OS X 10.5 support IDLE, and it's easy to see if you are taking advantage of it. Here's how:

 • Launch Mail.
 • Choose Mail > Preferences, and then click the Account tab.
 • Select an IMAP email account from the Accounts column.
 • If Use IDLE command if the server supports it is checked, the feature is already enabled. If not, go ahead and check it.

Leopard's Mail supports IMAP's IDLE protocol.

If your email server supports IDLE, you'll start to see messages arrive in your inbox a little sooner. If it doesn't support IDLE, you won't hurt anything by enabling the feature.

I leave IDLE support enabled so I don't have to manually check my email whenever anyone on the TMO team sends me a message and the iChats me with "Hey Jeff, check your email."

I read elsewhere that this was enabled by default. I never thought to look for it until now. I'm glad you posted this because this is not enabled by default.

Hi!
I have two Mac's computers PM QS867 / Mac OSX 10.4.2 / Mail.app 2.1
and intel iMac24" (new) / MacOS 10.5.2 / Mail.app 3.2
I have one connection to the Internet for both. And I have Fastmail 's account for several years.
In Mac OS 10.4 > Mail.app 2.1 I installed IMAP IDLE plug-in and check Mail.app>Pref >Check for New mail > Manually, as the results the new mail receivе immediately !
Now Mail.app 3.x (10.5.x) supports IDLE. But I can't get to receive new mail automatically, only via a "get mail" poll. After starting the Mail.app 3.x , new mail automatically receive only in the first few minutes and then do not, only after manual checks!
I tray IMAP Incomig Server: mail.messagingengine.com and imap.fastmail.fm
( SSL port 993)
The same thing happens with GMail's IMAP account.
I tried install IMAP IDLE plug-in, but it does not work in 10.5
Tell me, what's wrong?
Tanks!
Mikle A.
