5.5-inch iPhone 6 Photos Surface, Along with Horrible Name

Photos showing what are claimed to be components from a 5.5-inch version of the iPhone 6 have surfaced, although they don't exactly qualify as definitive proof that a super-size iPhone is on the way. The name that goes along with the big-screen model photos is a bit dubious, too: iPhone 6L.

The photos, posted by Apple Daily, show a logic board, display, and battery. Unfortunately, the photos don't offer much to back up the claims that they are 5.5-inch iPhone parts.

The logic board seems to match earlier 4.7-inch display iPhone 6 photos, and the display looks more like a components from a 4.7-inch phone -- unless the hand holding the screen is much larger than average.

The markings on the battery indicate 2,915 mAH capacity, which is substantially higher than the iPhone 5S. Assuming Apple is building a bigger iPhone model, the extra internal space could be used to house a higher capacity battery.

Apple is expected to unveil a 4.7-inch iPhone model on September 9 at a still unannounced media event. Rumors claim Apple is planning on releasing both a 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch version of the iPhone this fall, although most of the leaked photos so far have shown parts from only the smaller of the two.

Currently, Apple's iPhone lineup sports a 4-inch display on the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, and a 3.5-inch display on the economy-priced iPhone 4s.

Calling the 5.5-inch model "iPhone 6L" is possible, but doesn't fit with the typical naming convention Apple has been using. The company's long-running naming pattern alternates between using a number to identify the iPhone model, such as iPhone 5, and then adding a lowercase "s" to note its successor, such as iPhone 5s. Based on that pattern, the next iPhone model should be iPhone 6.

That said, Apple did add the iPhone 5c to its lineup last year, so it is possible the company could be adding yet another letter to the family name this year. Assuming Apple does go with "L" for the 5.5-inch model, people will assume it stands for "long," or "large," or if they aren't a fan, "lousy."

With Apple's rumored media event only a few weeks away, we'll know soon exactly what's in store for the next version of the iPhone. For now, it looks like we will get a bigger screen model, but there isn't much evidence to back up claims it will come in a 5.5-inch screen size.
