Apple Ranks Fifth in January Notebook Computer Sales [UPDATED]

Based on NPD Groupis sales numbers, Apple ranked fifth in the the U.S. in notebook computer sales in January capturing 10.1 percent of the market. Bloomberg.com reported the numbers Tuesday.

Hewlett-Packard was number one with 23.5 percent, Toshiba was number two with 18.5 percent, Lenovo was number three with 13.2 percent, and Gateway was number four with 12.7 percent market share.

In a related story at crn.com, Dell expects its notebook sales this year to be 20% lower and has been reducing its notebook orders from Taiwan manufacturers.

The Bloomberg site noted that: "figures are for retail channel sales only and do not include direct sales, sales from Wal-Mart or warehouse clubs."
