Apple Reports Record Number of Macs Sold

TMO Talk (1)

Apple reported a record number of Macintoshes sold, in its third quarter earnings report, of 1.76 million. Pro market sales received a significant boost. Apple expects to have sold one million iPhones by the end of September.

"...the pro business had a nice uptick as we shipped new version of final cut studio and Adobe [shipped] Creative Suite Three," Tim Cook, the Apple COO, said in response to how Apple is doing in commercial sales. The 1.76 million Macs reflects a 33 percent growth year over year in sales.

Peter Oppenheimer pointed out that this is "four times IDCis latest published growth estimate for the U.S. market in the June quarter. On a worldwide basis Appleis growth rate was more than two and a half times IDCis most recently published market growth rate for the quarter. "

Even more impressive was the notebook sales. Mr. Oppenheimer said that "Sales of Mac notebooks grew 42% year over year in the quarter and accounted for 64% of total Macs sold."

Regarding the iPhone, Mr. Cook reiterated Appleis projection of selling 10 million iPhones in 2008 in the U.S., Europe and selected Asian countries [unspecified] where Apple will sell the phone. The announcement of European countries and distribution partners will come at the next earnings report in October. Mr. Cook also pointed out that while it took Apple two years to sell its one millionth iPod, they sold 270,000 iPhones before the end of June and expect to sell 730,000 more, totaling 1M, by the end of September 2007.
