Apple Starts Free Computer Take-back Service

April 20th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - News by Jeff Gamet

Apple announced on Friday that it is launching a free computer recycling service in June. The service will be available to anyone that buys a new Mac through Appleis online or retail stores. The company picks up the shipping and disposal costs, saving you from any recycling expenses. All computers received through the program are recycled domestically, and no hazardous materials are shipped over seas.

Phil Schiller, Appleis senior vice president of WorldWide Product Marketing, said "Apple is committed to supporting our customers and protecting the environment throughout the entire product life cycle, from purchase through to retirement. Now we are making it even easier for Appleis customers to safely and affordably recycle their used computers and iPods."

Apple is no new comer to the electronics recycling scene. The company has been involved in recycling programs for several years, and even has a free drop-off center for old computers and some home electronic devices at its Cupertino headquarters.

Earlier this week, Apple was recognized for its environmentally friendly efforts by the Sierra Club. The environmental and outdoor organization named Apple a "Forward Green Leader," marking it as one of the top ten environmentally progressive companies.

More information about Apple Computeris environmental stance and recycling program is available at the companyis Web site.
