Apple Computer announced Tuesday it now has over 1,000 Dashboard Widgets available through its Web site for download.

In a prepared statement, Philip Schiller, Appleis senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing called Dashboard "a runaway hit."

Dashboard Widgets are small, standalone apps that display information such as news, traffic, weather and sports scores. Dashboard Widgets were introduced by Apple last year as part of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.

In comparison, Appleis nearest competitor to Dashboard Widgets, Konfabulator, has posted 1,077 of its similar Widgets for both Mac and Windows.
