IDC Claims Apple Is The Leader In The Educational Market

July 16th, 2001 at 3:00 PM - News by Kyle D\'Addario

Industry research firm IDC has issued a report stating that Apple is the unquestioned leader of the education market. In a report titled "Apple, Still at the Head of the Class: Installed PC Market Share in K-12 Education, 2000-2001," IDC claims Apple leads in both desktop and laptop sales to the education market, with more than 1/3 laptops sold to schools coming from Apple. According to Apple Computer:

Apple is the dominant leader in K-12 education according to a report issued by industry research firm, IDC. IDCis Report, "Apple, Still at the Head of the Class: Installed PC Market Share in K-12 Education, 2000-2001," shows Apple is leading the way in both desktops with a 27.7% share, and portables with a 34.7% share of the education market.

According to IDCis report, Apple has nearly twice as many desktop and portable computers in schools as its nearest competitor.

"Education is in our DNA at Apple," said Steve Jobs, Appleis CEO. "We have been the installed base leader in K-12 education for nearly 25 years and innovative products like our wirelessly networked new iBooks will keep us on top."

Recent IDC data also highlights that Apple is the number one supplier for notebook computers to education.*

"IDC forecasts a 30% growth rate for US Education market portable shipments in CY2001," said Tom Copeland, vice president of Worldwide Tracker Products for IDC. "IDC predicts that Portables will account for about 19.4% of US Education market units in CY2001, up from 15.8% in CY2000."

You can find more information about all of Appleis education-related products at the Apple Web site.
