Id has announced that the latest Quake 3 Arena "point release," version 1.29f Beta, is now available for Mac OS X. Not only does the latest released bring OS X users up to date with other platform releases, it is the first "official" version of Quake 3 for Mac OS X. The Omni Group had released a port of Quake 3 Arena that ran under Public Beta, but this version is fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.0.3. According to Id:
The long awaited new release of the Quake III Arena patch (1.29f Beta) is now available. The list of changes in this release is just massive!
In a nutshell...
- New pro maps
- New network code
- New auto-update system
- New rail, rocket, plasma, and lightning gun effects
- New cheating counter measures
This release will update any previous installation of Quake III Arena
A Mac "Classic" release is not available at this time, but we will have an official release when this release moves out of a beta state.
Be prepared for wickedly busy servers, and a 25MB download, but you can find more information on the latest release at the Quake 3 Arena Web site.
