OWC Introduces Memory Upgrades for New Mac Pros

Other World Computing (OWC) announced the immediate availability of its new FB-DIMM 800 MHz Memory upgrades for the new Mac Pro 8-Core Xeons announced by Apple on Tuesday. Prices are as low as US$48.75/GB. Memory modules used in the previous generation Mac Pro are not compatible with the new Mac Pros.

The OWC (FB-DIMM) 800 MHz DDR2 72-Bit ECC fully-buffered Memory Upgrade Modules are available in matched sets of 1.0 GB, 2.0 GB, and 4.0 GB modules for up to 32.0 GB of total memory.

A cash-back rebate of up to US$55.00 per set is also available from OWC for the trade-in of Apple factory memory. The OWC Memory Upgrade Kits consist of matched pairs of FB-DIMM modules manufactured to Appleis stringent Mac Pro specifications, far exceeding JEDEC specifications.

The new memory modules are priced as follows. Price assumes the use of the rebate.

  • 2.0 GB Matched Sets (1.0 GB Module x 2) for as low as $60.00/GB
  • 4.0 GB Matched Sets (2.0 GB Module x 2) for as low as $48.75/GB
  • 8.0 GB Matched Sets (4.0 GB Module x 2) for as low as $85.94/GB

OWC noted that memory modules used in the previous generation Mac Pros will not work in the new, faster Mac Pros with the Xeon 5400. The new systems have a 1,600 MHz FSB and use PC6400 DDR2 ECC 800 MHZ Mac Pro FB-DIMMs.

The older generation Mac Pros have a 1,333 MHz FSB and use PC5300 DDR2 ECC 667MHZ Mac Pro FB-DIMMs.
