XTools Allows X Windows Apps To Run Trough Aqua

Tenon has announced the official release of their rootless X Windows server, XTools. XTools allows users to run the X Windows environment on their Mac OS X desktop, and use Appleis Aqua interface as the window manager for X applications. XTools also allows users to run a rooted X Windows server outside of Appleis Aqua environment. According to Tenon:

Tenon Intersystems announced today the release of Xtools 1.0 - a fully integrated X desktop for Mac OS X. Tenonis high-performance X Window Server provides seamless integration between an X Window display environment and Macintosh applications. Tenonis new X Window Server is an easy-to-use, flexible, Mac OS X application that integrates the best elements of Appleis Aqua desktop with state-of-the-art X Window tools to provide a powerful extension to Appleis new operating system.

Xtools, based on the latest X11R6.4 and XFree86, is a multithreaded Cocoa application, optimized for both the velocity engine and multiple processors. Tenonis new X window server uses Appleis CoreGraphics and the Quartz display engine. Xtoolsi hardware-accelerated OpenGL includes a suite of clickable OpenGL applications. The new Xtools package supports rootless X windows on the Aqua desktop, as well as a rooted full-screen X desktop. In addition to the rootless Aqua-style window manager, alternative window managers, such as a Motif Window Manager (mwm) and the Tab Window Manager (twm), are available for both the rootless and full-screen desktops.

All the standard Macintosh-style features are supported by Xtoolsi tight integration with Mac OS X: a configurable application menu for easy set-up and easy execution of remote X clients; copy and paste between Macintosh applications and X applications; multiple monitor display; and use of the OS X hardware cursor. All the standard X Window features are supported: full X color support, including True Color, Color Database, Pseudo Color, Color Visuals; full X font support with almost 1000 fonts, including CDE fonts, and X font server support; X Display Manager (XDM) support; and 3-button mouse support, including keystroke to mouse-button mapping.

The X Window System is an open source, industry standard for displaying remote graphical applications. Tenonis Xtools not only allows remote X Window applications to be displayed on the Mac OS X desktop, but also includes a complete set of X Window tools and libraries to support local execution of X applications and X games on OS X. Extending Mac OS X with an X Window porting environment enables high-resolution 3D-modeling & animation, graphical visualization and image rendering applications to be built directly on Mac OS X. More than 100 X applications are already able to run on OS X with Xtools, including popular open source applications, such as GIMP and Tk.

XTools is available for US$199, with an educational discount available for US$99. You can find more information at the Tenon Web site.
