Adobe to Skip Macworld Expo 2009

TMO Talk (6)

Adobe's traditional spot on the Macworld Expo floor is up for grabs because the company won't be exhibiting at the January 2009 event in San Francisco. The company won't, however, be missing from the event because it will still be involved in several conference training events.

Adobe representatives stated "While we will not be exhibiting at the show this year, we are fortunate to be aligned with a rich ecosystem of partners who will be showcasing our solutions in their booths. The Mac community is very important to us and we will continue our strong support for this platform."

The company has historically manned a large booth on the Macworld Expo floor where it showed off it products like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Dreamweaver. Considering Adobe's recent Creative Suite 4 launch, many potential expo attendees were likely hoping to get some face time with the company before purchasing new versions of the print, Web and multimedia design applications.

Adobe representatives didn't state why the company chose to skip the once-a-year event, although it's easy to speculate that the current economic downturn may have played a role in the decision. "Adobe has decided to shift its focus at the Macworld tradeshow this year. Macworld is a valuable industry show and we will still be an active part of it with members of our product team involved in Macworld tracks," company representatives said.

Macworld Expo runs from January 5 through January 9, 2009, at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco. For additional information about the Expo and events, visit the Macworld Expo Web site.

Adobe has not stated whether or not it plans to participate in future Macworld Expo events.

First Apple starts moving away from Pro users with the less-than-pro MacBook Pros with glossy screens, now Adobe is scaling back it’s presence at MacWorld?

When you can’t stand the heat, you get out of the kitchen.

Perhaps they don’t want us CS4 users commenting on the interface for the apps. smile

Well they will be at the seminars, but maybe they don’t see the cost benefit of having an exhibit.

I guess Adobe’s thinking that most of the MW attendees that would be potential customers are already plenty aware of the CS4 stuff. “Preaching to the Choir”, so to speak.

The training sessions likely contain a more focused demographic, so it’s probably money well spent.

Although I consider some Adobe products more essential to my work than anything Apple makes, the one time I went to MW, I never set foot in the Adobe booth. There wasn’t anything there I didn’t already know about.

Not a comment on Adobe’s no-show per-se; but, I have not upgraded to CS4 because it seems to me that CS4 does not offer enough compelling new features. The only things that really interest me with InDesign is the new smart alignment guides, similar to those in Apple’s Pages and iWeb…oh! and those in Adobe’s Illustrator. Photoshop offers smart scaling that seems pretty nice. Doesn’t look like there is much else; yet, the upgrade costs $600. Pretty steep. Has anyone seen the promo piece Adobe made with the lady who talks about moving from one app to the other seamlessly? It is full of generalities and few specifics. Sounds like a politician talking. So, I think Adobe has some real work to do…

For me it is a long story about a quick decision. A few weeks ago I upgraded to CS4 from CS2. I skipped CS3 because I didn’t see the value in it and CS2 was working for me with 2 exceptions; CS2 versions of InDesign and Distiller crashed under Leopard so I switched to Pages for layout and distilled the files on my iBook. I knew the time was coming when I would need to upgrade, but I was holding on as long as I could Then my iMac starting acting up, the SMU I think, shutting itself down at odd moments so I took the plunge and bought a new iMac and CS4.

Anyway, in my opinion CS4 is probably a good upgrade from CS2 and CS1, quirks not withstanding. I wish Adobe would design their interfaces for the Mac and port it to WIndows instead of the other way around.
