Sales of Apple’s products, including the popular iPad, were up year-over-year on Black Friday, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. iPad sales shot up 68 percent compared to Black Friday in 2010, he said, and Mac sales jumped up 23 percent, too.

Black Friday iPad sales: Cha-ching!Apple’s iPad proved popular on Black Friday

Mr. Munster and his team spent eight hours monitoring Apple Store traffic the day after Thanksgiving to gauge product sales. The noted about 544 people per hour passed through the doors, and that the company sold 14.8 iPads, along with 10.1 Macs per hour.

The Piper Jaffray team has been monitoring Black Friday sales at Apple stores since 2008, which also happens to be the year where they tracked the highest number of Mac sales per hour at 13. In 2009, they notes 8.3 Macs per hour, and 8.2 in 2010. No iPad figures for those years are available since the multimedia tablet hadn’t been released yet.

Mr. Munster expects Apple will sell 13.5 million iPads and 5.2 million Macs during the quarter ending December 31.

Apple is currently trading at US$372.86, up (.29 (2.56%).

I suppose that the discount helped, but it the iPad is on a lot of shopping lists anyway.

I was up at Barnes & Noble Bookstore on Friday evening. The Nook nook had a lot of traffic and people seem to be buying them.
