Rovio plans to use the $42 million investment to expand the Angry Birds brand into more markets. “This investment is very important, and right now we are in a very aggressive expansion mode to shape the company into an important entertainment media company,” Rovio co-founder Mikael Hed told the Wall Street Journal.

The company has already taken the game beyond the iPhone and iPad to Mac OS X as well as Google’s Android, and will be bringing the game to Facebook and gaming consoles soon, too. The company also signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to feature the Angry Birds characters in the animated movie “Rio.”

Angry Birds Seasons HD for the iPad is priced at US$1.99, and Angry Birds Seasons for the iPhone and iPod touch costs $0.99. Both are available for download at Apple’s iTunes-based App Store.
