ApiMac Releases Protect Files 1.0 Security Utility
January 9th, 2009 at 5:30 PM - News by Chris Barylick
Software developer ApiMac on Friday introduced Protect Files 1.0, a file and folder encryption application that allows users to create password-locked encrypted space for files folders on internal and external hard drives.
The program, once used, creates an encrypted space that appears as a volume on your desktop. When the space is locked, its content is secure. When unlocked, users can copy, move, and delete files.
The secured space defaults to 128-bit AES encryption, but that can be changed to 256-bit AES in the application’s preferences.
Protect Files 1.0 retails for $15, with a trial version also available.
The software runs on OS X 10.4 and later to install and run.

I have been using Crypt3, very pleased with it. $10
The price is certainly right.
We mac users have at least two free options for making encrypted files in our Macs.
1. The Disk Utility.app inside that ships with MacOS X inside the Utilities menue.
2. And, though I haven’t tried it myself, TrueCrypt, which allows for compatibility across platforms:
“Free open-source disk encryption software for Windows Vista/XP, Mac OS X, and Linux”
This appears to be nothing more than a GUI wrapper around the Disk Image framework, the same framework used by Disk Utility and FileVault.
