Apple Supports New Cameras in Two RAW Updates, New Epson Drivers

Camera RAWIn addition to a Mountain Lion update and security updates for Snow Leopard and Lion, Apple also released two Camera RAW updates (4.0.8 and 4.0.9) and new Epson printer drivers. The RAW updates add support for several new cameras (see below), while the printer driver update doesn't specify its purpose.

Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.09 (6.59MB download)

  • Olympus PEN E-P5

It also includes changes that:

  • Restore lens correction to Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 images
  • Address a white balance issue with some Nikon images that were modified by third-party applications

Epson Printer Drivers v2.15 for OS X (1.03GB - note that says gigabyte, not megabyte)

This update installs the latest software for your EPSON printer or scanner.

And as usual, the Epson printer drivers delivered by Apple will screw-up a feature, if not completely lock you out from printing. Honestly, they need to leave the printer drivers to the printer manufacturer.

It sucks to download a GB file directly from Epson just for the 20 or so MB you need for your particular printer, but it’s worth it to not have to try to find an older printer driver to “fix” it.

Unless the update fixes a particular problem you’re having, I would avoid updating printer drivers like you would needless dental work.
