Apple TV gets Vevo, Disney Channel, More

| News

Apple added several new channels to Apple TV on Tuesday, including Vevo, Disney Channel, Disney XD, Smithsonian, and The Weather Channel. Reports that Vevo was coming to Apple TV surfaced in early August, but until today there wasn't any official confirmation.

Vevo's content is available to all Apple TV owners, as is The Weather Channel and Smithsonian. Both of Disney's channels, however, require a cable or satellite TV subscription, just like many other channels available on Apple TV.

Apple pushed the new channels out to Apple TV owners, so there isn't anything special needed to get the new content; just check your Apple TV home screen for the new channel badges.

One content provider at a time…

I’m glad that finally there are more channels. I just wish I could get all of the ones I want and eliminate all of the others. I love a-la-carte and I would gladly pay a small fee for the stations I want. I would probably save a bunch on my cable bill.

Usually, I spend a ton of time eliminating hundreds of stations to get to the few I want to watch each time I setup my cable at the beginning of college football season. Then I shut down at the end of the season.
It would nice to select just the ones I needed at the time I needed them.

The paradigm of the app store would be a good comparison. Before I would pay 30-40 dollars on some programs or even more, but I wasn’t able to get very many. Now I probably spend more on programs because the apps are cheaper and it seems easier to spend a buck on an app even if you are not sure how useful it will ultimately be.

Are these free channels or must one subscribe/pay?

I’ve got vimeo, but not the others. Maybe because I’m in Canada?

I don’t suppose there’s a way to sort that screen by free vs. cable-subscription-needed?
