Apple Drops 3GS iPhone Price to $49

Apple has followed AT&T’s lead and dropped the price of the iPhone 3GS to US$49. AT&T made the price cut official last Friday, on the heels of December promos by Best Buy, Radio Shack, and others.

Apple released the iPhone 3GS during the summer of 2009, but it continued to be sold for $99 after the iPhone 4 was announced last summer. Radio Shack’s holiday deal last month also knocked $50 off the price of the iPhone 4, but prices for the current-gen smartphone seem poised to remain where they previously were for the time being.

Meanwhile, Verizon will host a media event on Tuesday, and the scuttlebutt from many, including the Wall Street Journal, is that the cell carrier will announce the addition of the iPhone to its lineup.
