Apple Launches iPhone 4S Preorders

As promised, Apple began accepting preorders for the new iPhone 4S on Friday. So far, the company is showing that purchases made today will arrive on the official launch date, October 14.

Apple introduced the iPhone 4S during a special media event earlier this week. The new model uses the same body design as the iPhone 4, but includes a dual core A5 processor, a new antenna design, better battery life, built-in combination GSM and CDMA cell network support, an 8 megapixel camera, Siri voice control, and more.

The iPhone 4S is available in black or white and is priced at US$199 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model, and $399 for the 64GB model. In the United States, the iPhone is available on the AT&T, Verizon and Sprint cell networks and requires a two-year contract to get the advertised subsidized prices.

Many iPhone 4 owners, however, are seeing higher prices for the new model because they are still too early in their current service contracts.

iPhone owners that still have AT&T unlimited data packages and want to upgrade to the iPhone 4S will be able to carry over the plan to their new phone. Those users will continue to pay $30 a month for their data plan.

Despite the fact that the iPhone 4S includes the hardware to work on both GSM and CDMA-based cell networks, it is still locked to specific carriers unless customers are willing to pay substantially more for an unlocked version of the phone. Carrier unlocked iPhone 4S models will be available in November.

Customers can preorder their iPhone 4S through the Apple Web site.
