Apple Releases AirPort Utility 6.0 & AirPort Firmware 7.6.1

TMO Talk (8)

Apple released AirPort Utility 6.0 on Monday, an update to the company’s software for managing AirPort base stations. The company also released AirPort Base Station and Time Capsule Firmware Update 7.6.1. Both updates include improvements to Apple’s WiFi performance and other new features.

AirPort Utility 6.0 adds a new graphical overview of your WiFi network and the devices on that network. It includes a new interface for managing that network, as well.

Apple’s patch notes for AirPort Utility 6.0:

Use AirPort Utility to set up and manage your Wi-Fi network and AirPort base stations, including AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and Time Capsule. See a graphical overview of your Wi-Fi network and devices. Change base station and network settings, or manage advanced features such as security modes, wireless channels, and more.

The firmware update is for all 802.11n AirPort Express, 802.11n AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule models, The patch notes say simply that it, “fixes an issue with wireless performance and provides support for remote access to an AirPort disk or a Time Capsule hard drive with an iCloud account.”

AirPort Utility 6.0 can be downloaded through Software Update or through the update’s webpage on Apple’s support site. The firmware update can then be downloaded through AirPort Utility.

Just to highlight that if you have an older router such as a non-N Airport Express, you cannot use this to administrate it. A detail I didn’t notice at first. So you will have to download the 5.6 version and keep both until your older devices finally die.

As well, while I never used the features, it appears the new utility drops some advanced options regarding logging and statistics.

Prettied up and dumbed down for the iOS crowd, indeed.
